Four football players earn Academic All-District honors
Four members of the Kalamazoo College football team were awarded ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors on Thursday, Nov. 5. Brandon Luczak and Nate Kopydlowski were selected to the first team while Jimmy Semelsberger and Jared Andrzejewski were selected to the second team. As first-team selections, Luczak and Kopydlowski are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Luczak, a senior quarterback from Rochester Hills, carries a 3.85 GPA as a chemistry major. He currently leads the nation (NCAA III) in passing yards (2,927) and is second in completions per game, passing yards per game and total offense per game. He set a Kalamazoo College record with 30 touchdown passes this season. Kopydlowski, a senior linebacker from Goodrich, carries a 3.96 GPA as a biology major. He is currently second on the team with 65 tackles this season.

Semelsberger, a senior wide receiver from Bloomfield Hills, carries a 3.58 GPA as an economics and business major. Semelsberger set school records for career receptions (241) and career receiving yards(2,783), and is currently ranked eighth in NCAA III in receptions per game. Andrzejewski, a senior offensive lineman from Saint Johns, carries a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in economics and business as well as psychology. Andrzejewski was an All-MIAA second team offensive lineman last season.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America/All-District program is coordinated and voted upon by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). To be nominated, a player must be a starter or significant reserve with a minimum 3.3 GPA.

Men's Soccer wins 2-1 at Albion
The men's soccer team won 2-1 at Albion on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Dagan Hammar scored in the sixth minute (Phil Jackson assist). Ben Darling made it 2-0 with a goal in the 29th minute (Dane Carey assist). Albion scored its only goal in the 71st minute. Ben Schroeder made one save in goal for the Hornets. Dane Macdonell made two saves. With the win, Kalamazoo improved to 7-8-2 overall and 7-5-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets have won four of their last five games and have moved into third place in the MIAA. Volleyball bows out of MIAA Tournament with loss at Alma
The volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (25-16, 25-23, 12-25, 25-12) in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Kalamazoo entered as the #6 seed while Alma was the #3 seed. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with 12 kills, a .214 attack percentage and eight block assists. Johanna Kupe added seven kills. Larisa Grinvalds had 28 digs. Box Score

Women's Soccer advances to MIAA Tournament Finals
After playing Calvin to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, Kalamazoo won the shootout 3-1 to advance to Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship. In today's shootout, Paige Howell scored on the Hornets' first attempt. Calvin scored immediately following to tie. Jackie Short scored on Kalamazoo's third attempt, and Julia Schroeder clinched it with a goal in the Hornets' fifth attempt. Courtney McCoy made saves on two of Calvin's four attempts. McCoy made six saves during regulation and overtime. Calvin was the #1 seed in the tournament after finishing 7-1 in the regular season. Kalamazoo entered the tournament as the #4 seed with a 5-2-1 league record. Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship is scheduled for noon in Kalamazoo. Anja Burk and Ben Schroeder earn Academic All-District soccer honors
Kalamazoo College soccer players Anja Burk and Ben Schroeder were selected to receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the 2009 season. Burk, a senior defender from Saline (Saline HS), was selected to the Academic All-District IV Second Team. A biology major with a 3.94 GPA, Burk is a key starter on a defense that has a 1.46 goals against average. She was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for week seven this season. Schroeder, a senior goalkeeper from Livonia (Stevenson HS), was selected to the Academic All-District IV Second Team. An economics major with a 3.66 GPA, Schroeder has a 0.75 goals against average with five shutouts in 13 starts. Men's Cross Country sixth, Women seventh at MIAA Championships
Jillian McLaughlin earns All-MIAA honors
The men's cross country team took sixth place while the women's team finished seventh at the MIAA Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. The women's team had 162 points and was just six points out of sixth place and eight points out of fifth place. The men's team had 164 points. Jillian McLaughlin finished seventh overall with a time of 23:32 and earned All-MIAA First Team honors for the third time in her career. Ellen Conner finished 48th and Katy Sly finished 49th. Volleyball ends regular season with loss at Albion
The volleyball team lost its regular season finale 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-10) at Albion on Saturday, Oct. 31. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with six kills and seven digs. Kim Marble had five kills. Allison Liddane had 15 assists. Kalamazoo finished the regular season in sixth place. The Hornets will be on the road at Alma for the first round of the MIAA Tournament beginning Tuesday, Nov. 3. Men's Soccer shuts out nationally-ranked Calvin
The men's soccer team held nationally-ranked Calvin College scoreless with a 3-0 win on Saturday, Oct. 31. Martin Blanc opened the scoring on a free kick just outside the box in the 19th minute. Jared Georgakopoulos added a goal off a header in the 23rd minute (Thomas Lorentzen assist). Dane Carey scored in the 49th minute (Georgakopoulos assist). Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 14-6, but only one of Calvin's shots was on goal. Of Kalamazoo's six shots, four were on goal and three resulted in goals. Women's Soccer defeats Hope 1-0, advances to MIAA Semifinals
The women's soccer team defeated Hope 1-0 in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 31. Jackie Short scored the game's only goal 4:10 into the first half (Katie Manstrom assist). Kalamazoo outshot Hope 12-8, including 5-2 on goal. Courtney McCoy made two saves in goal to earn the shutout. With the win, Kalamazoo advances to Tuesday's MIAA Tournament Semifinal match at Calvin. Swim teams win season's first dual meets
The Kalamazoo College swimming and diving teams got off to a good start as the women's team defeated Saint Mary's 180-107 and the men's team defeated Wabash 170-126 at Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 30. Winning events for the women's team were: 200 Medley Relay (Weeks, Chamberlain, Knoechel, Edsall), Katie Grue (200 freestyle, 200 butterfly), Kate Chamberlain (100 breaststroke), Taryn Edsall (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Erin Campbell (1m diving, 3m diving), Kaitlin Weeks (200 backstroke) and the 200 Freestyle Relay (Edsall, Baumann, Chamberlain, Grue). Winning events for the men were: 400 Medley Relay (Ellis, Espinosa, Mueller, Bazzell), Paul Ellis (100 backstroke), Alfonso Espinosa (100 breaststroke), Brian Bazzell (50 freestyle), Craig Fleming (100 freestyle), Steve Brower (200 backstroke), Chris Manning (200 breaststroke), Barret Mueller (100 butterfly), Colin Mervak (3m diving) and the 400 Freestyle Relay (Bazzell, Ellis, Espinosa, Fleming). Volleyball defeats Saint Mary's on Senior Night
The volleyball team fell 25-22 in the first set, but the Hornets rallied to take the next three sets to win 3-1 over Saint Mary's on Senior Night in Kalamazoo. The Hornets let a lead slip away in the first set, but came back to win 25-23 in the second, 25-17 in the third and 25-20 in the fourth. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with 14 kills, 19 digs and six blocks. Kim Marble had 12 kills. Allison Liddane had 37 assists. Larisa Grinvalds had 26 digs. Volleyball wins 3-1 at Olivet
The volleyball team won 3-1 (25-8, 11-25, 25-19, 25-17) at Olivet on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with 14 kills and a .316 attack percentage. Johanna Kupe added seven kills. Women's Soccer suffers 2-1 overtime loss to Alma
The women's soccer team lost 2-1 in double overtime to Alma on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The loss puts Kalamazoo in a third-place tie with Alma in the final regular season standings, but makes Kalamazoo the fourth seed in the MIAA Tournament. As the fourth seed, Kalamazoo is scheduled to host fifth-seeded Hope on Saturday, Oct. 31 at noon. Kalamazoo scored first as Stephanie Verbeek found the back of the net with just 1:20 left in the first half. Alma tied the score in the 78th minute and scored the game-winner off a header in the 16th minute of overtime. Alma had 20 shots to Kalamazoo 17, including 11-10 on goal. Men's Soccer falls 2-1 in overtime at Olivet
The men's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime at Olivet on Tuesday, Oct. 27. After a scoreless first half, Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead when Dane Carey scored on a penalty kick four minutes into the second half. Olivet tied the score on a penalty kick with just 2:50 remaining in regulation. The Comets scored the game-winner 4:27 into overtime. Olivet held a 19-10 advantage in shots, including 11-3 on goal. Emily Gray named MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Emily Gray, a freshman from Clarkston (Pontiac Notre Dame Prep HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Gray came off the bench to provide a spark for the Hornets in their 3-2 come-from-behind win over Saint Mary’s. Along with her strong ball winning in the midfield, Gray scored the tying goal and set up the eventual game-winning tally with a through ball to an attacking teammate behind the Saint Mary’s backline. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Dane Carey named MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Dane Carey, a junior from Roscommon (Roscommon HS), was selected as the MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Carey had two goals and an assist in leading the Hornets to a pair of MIAA wins. He had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Alma, then headed in the winning goal with 37 seconds remaining in the second overtime as Kalamazoo edged Adrian, 2-1. Carey is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Jimmy Semelsberger named MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jimmy Semelsberger, a senior from Bloomfield Hills (Lahser HS), was named MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week. Semelsberger accounted for more than 200 yards of all-purpose running in Kalamazoo’s 41-20 loss to Trine. He caught a school record-tying 15 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, ran back four kickoffs for 68 yards and added 15 yards rushing on two attempts. Semelsberger, who leads the MIAA with 34 catches in league play, is being honored as Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career.

Dane Carey scores Men's Soccer game-winner in overtime
Dane Carey scored with just 37 seconds left in the second overtime to lift Kalamazoo to a 2-1 win at Adrian on Saturday, Oct. 24. Martin Blanc had the assist. Adrian scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute and held the lead until Jared Georgakopoulos tied the game with just seven minutes left in regulation. The teams played 19 minutes of scoreless overtime before Carey's header went into the goal for the win. Each team had 15 shots and eight shots on goal. Swim teams compete at MIAA Relays
The men's and women's swim teams competed at the MIAA Relays hosted by Calvin on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Kalamazoo men won five relays, including the 200 medley, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly. The Kalamazoo women took second place in three relays, the 200 medley, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke. The teams open dual meet competition next Friday, Oct. 30 at Notre Dame. Football suffers 41-20 loss at Trine
The football team suffered a 41-20 loss at league-leading Trine on Saturday, Oct. 24. The two teams were tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter, but Trine scored just before halftime to take a 14-7 lead into the break. Trine scored 20 straight points in the third quarter to go up 34-7. The Thunder rushed for 297 yards and had 496 yards of total offense. Kalamazoo passed for 325 yards and had 430 yards of total offense. Brandon Luczak passed for 299 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He set a new school record with his 30th touchdown pass of the season. Jimmy Semelsberger tied a school record with 15 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Jackie Short scores twice in Women's Soccer win over Saint Mary's
The women's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 24. With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-1-1 in the MIAA and remain in the hunt for an MIAA championship or first-round bye in the MIAA Tournament. Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Kalamazoo's Emily Gray evened the score with a goal in the 33rd minute (Stephanie Verbeek assist) as the game remained tied 1-1 at halftime. Jackie Short gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 54th minute (Maya Smolcic assist), and Short scored again just two minutes later to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead (Emily Gray assist). Saint Mary's scored again in the 80th minute to make it 3-2, but Kalamazoo was able to hold on for the win. Kalamazoo had 16 shots to Saint Mary's 10, including 12-8 on goal. Leonard has 16 kills in Volleyball's five-set loss to Alma
Colleen Leonard matched her season high with 16 kills, but it wasn't quite enough as the Hornets lost to Alma in five sets on Friday, Oct. 23. Kalamazoo won two of the first three sets, but Alma battled back to win 25-20 in the fourth and 15-13 in the final set. Leonard had 16 kills and 23 digs with a .212 attack percentage. Men's Soccer shuts out Alma, 3-0
The men's soccer team scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of a 3-0 win over Alma on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Dane Carey had a goal and two assists. Dagan Hammar had a goal and an assist. Martin Blanc also had a goal. Ben Schroeder made three saves in goal. The Hornets travel to Adrian on Saturday, Oct. 24 with a 2:30 p.m. start. Box Score

Volleyball defeats Adrian 3-1 in Dig for the Cure match
The Kalamazoo College volleyball team defeated Adrian 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21) in the annual Dig for the Cure match in support of the Komen Foundation of Southwest Michigan. Colleen Leonard and Johanna Kupe each had 10 kills to lead the Hornets. Kim Marble and Courtney Nartker each added eight kills. Nartker also had 23 assists. Larisa Grinvalds had a team-high 19 assists while Autumn Cussen added 16 assists and four service aces. Anna Lau had eight block assists. Ben Darling, Anja Burk earn MIAA Soccer honors
Kalamazoo College's Ben Darling and Anja Burk were named the MIAA Soccer Defensive Players of the Week on Monday, Oct. 19.

Ben Darling, a junior from Suttons Bay (Suttons Bay HS), anchored the Hornets’ defense as they posted consecutive shutouts, edging Trine 1-0 and playing to a double-overtime scoreless tie with Hope. Darling’s strong play has helped the Hornets limit their opposition to an average of less than a goal per game in MIAA play. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Anja Burk, a senior from Saline (Saline HS), anchored the Kalamazoo defense with her strong one-on-one marking and consistent ball winning in leading the Hornets to MIAA wins over Hope, 1-0, and Olivet, 4-1. Burk’s play along the backline has helped Kalamazoo hold MIAA opponents to just four goals in six league games this season. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Men's Soccer plays Hope to 0-0 tie
The men's soccer team played Hope to a 0-0 tie on Hope's stadium dedication day, Saturday, Oct. 17. Neither team was able to score through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime. Kalamazoo had a 19-14 advantage in shots, including 6-5 on goal. Ben Schroeder made five saves in goal for the Hornets. Kalamazoo is now 3-4-1 in the MIAA while Hope slips out of a first place tie at 5-1-2. Box Score

Men's Cross Country fifth, Women seventh at Manchester Invitational
The men's cross country team finished fifth and the women's team finished seventh at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17. Stefan Dylewski finished 14th overall with a time of 27:15. Football falls 33-23 to Alma on Homecoming
The football team suffered a 33-23 loss to Alma on Saturday, Oct. 17. Alma returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and took a 20-14 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo got within three points (26-23) with 10:13 left in the fourth quarter, but Alma came right back with a five minute scoring drive to go up 33-23. Kalamazoo drove to the Alma 34, but could not convert on fourth down and Alma was able to run out the clock for the win. Brandon Luczak passed for 279 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Ryan Bizzis had nine catches for 112 yards. Cory McCain had six catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Women's Soccer defeats Olivet 4-1 on Homecoming
The women's soccer team helped celebrate Homecoming with a 4-1 win over Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kalamazoo scored three times during an eight-minute span late in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Natalie Reszka scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute. C.J. McCarthy scored just two minutes later in the 32nd minute (Emily Gray assist). Jackie Jessup scored in the 38th minute (C.J. McCarthy assist). Olivet scored in the 61st minute to make it 3-1. Rachel Pitzer scored Kalamazoo's fourth goal in the 81st minute. Kalamazoo had 15 shots to Olivet's eight, but each team had six shots on goal. Athletic Hall of Fame induction set for Friday night
The 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame inductions are set for Friday night, Oct. 16, as part of the Alumni Awards Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in Dalton Theatre. The 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees are: Mitch Veldkamp '91 (diving), Clint Wagner '96 (baseball, football), Sandi (Poniatowski) Gerwin '00 (soccer), and Bob Kent (men's swimming/diving coach & men's athletics director). Volleyball falls on the road to Trine
The volleyball team lost to Trine in three sets on Wednesday, 29-27, 25-23, 25-22. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with eight kills and 12 digs. Courtney Nartker had 16 assists. Larisa Grinvalds had 13 digs. Kalamazoo is off until Oct. 20 when the Hornets host Adrian in the annual Dig for the Cure match to benefit the Komen Foundation of Southwest Michigan. Donations will be accepted at the door, and donations will be accepted the week before the match that will allow you to add your loved ones name to the wall of strength. In addition, pink volleyballs will be used during the match and auctioned off between sets two and three with teams available afterward to sign them. Men's Golf finishes seventh at final MIAA Jamboree
The men's golf team finished seventh at the final MIAA Jamboree of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Hope. The women's soccer team defeated Hope 1-0 in overtime in Holland on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Jackie Short scored the game winner with less than a minute left in overtime to lift the Hornets to a 5-5-3 record overall (3-1-1 MIAA). Kalamazoo outshot Hope 21-7, including 14-5 on goal. Courtney McCoy made five saves on goal for the shutout. This was the first Hornets' win over Hope since the 2001 season. Kalamazoo returns to action with a home game against Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon. Box Score
